Can I upgrade Windows 7 to Windows 10 without losing data on my laptop?

Has been using Windows 7 for years with my ASUSPRO laptop (BU401LG). I decided to upgrade the OS from Windows 7 to Windows 10 as the Windows 7 is out of date. I can't upgrade it to Windows 11 as the processor is not supported.

I need to keep the apps and files. How can I upgrade Windows 7 to Windows 10 without losing data?

It is a bit challenging to upgrade Windows 7 to Windows 10 if you want to keep all apps and personal files. Reinstalling Windows 10 will cause data loss for sure. You can check this simple guide to get it done smoothly. I have upgraded two old Asus laptops upgraded to Windows 10 without any data loss.

The free upgrade Windows 7 to Windows 10 officially ended in July 2016, but the upgrade still works if you use the Media Creation Tool and enter a valid Windows 7 key during setup.
Step 1: Check Compatibility

  • Your ASUSPRO BU401LG should meet the basic requirements for Windows 10.
  • Make sure your system has enough space (at least 20GB free).
  • Update your current Windows 7 to the latest Service Pack (SP1) and all available updates.
Step 2: Download the Media Creation Tool
  • Visit the official Microsoft tool and click Download tool now.

Step 3: Run the Upgrade Assistant

  • Launch the Media Creation Tool.
  • Choose Upgrade this PC now.
  • Follow the prompts to start the upgrade process.
  • The tool will download Windows 10 and will guide you through the installation.

Step 4: Keep Files and Apps

  • During setup, select the option to keep everything (files, apps, and settings).
  • The installer will check for compatibility and proceed with the upgrade, preserving your data and most apps.
    Step 5: Complete the Upgrade
The process may take some time and your PC will restart multiple times.
Once finished, you'll have Windows 10 with your files and apps intact.

To upgrade Windows 7 to Windows 10 without losing your files and apps, use Microsoft's official Media Creation Tool. Download and run the tool from Microsoft's website, then select "Upgrade this PC now." During installation, choose the option to "Keep personal files and applications." This process preserves all your data, settings, and installed programs. Before starting, ensure you have a stable internet connection, back up critical data as a precaution, and check that your laptop meets Windows 10 system requirements. Your existing Windows 7 license will automatically activate Windows 10.

Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant. This is a tool provided by Microsoft that helps users upgrade their current operating system (such as Windows 7 or 8.1) to Windows 10. How to upgrade Windows 7 to Windows 10:

1. Download the tool from the official Windows 10 download page.

2. Open the tool, and it will automatically begin checking your system for compatibility.

3. If your PC passes the compatibility check, it will prompt you to start the upgrade.

4. Once you confirm, the tool will begin downloading Windows 10 and start the Windows 7 to Windows 10 upgrade process.

5. After the installation, your PC will restart, and you'll be prompted to complete some final setup steps.
