Seriously: Any demonstrated solution to AI mesh random disconnects?

DudeBro
Star I

Hi.  I have a RT-AX86U Pro about a year old and under warranty.  I have what seems to be a prevalent issue on this forum and other home networking forums — chronic random AI Mesh WiFI disconnects.  I purchased several months ago 2 new RP-AX58 mesh repeaters and have them in AI mesh mode hoping to improve connectivity/stability across my home.  One is wired backhaul to my RT-AX86U Pro, the other is 5Ghz wireless backhaul.  I have unplugged the wireless RP-AX58 assuming the other wired backhaul one would be solid, but not the case.   I have 2 primary LAN SSID for 2.4Ghz vs 5GHz, and 2 similar Guest SSIDs for 2.4Ghz vs 5Ghz.

This prior Zen forum post (although a different newer BE router) is almost exactly what I could have posted for symptoms, error logs, and checklist of troubleshooting:   https://zentalk.asus.com/t5/networking/rt-be88u-repeated-wlan-interruptions/td-p/465098?awc=31828_17...

I have followed standardized Asus support responses to troubleshooting AI mesh instability with random dropped network WiFi devices despite having solid signals. (I.e. iOT devices reported disconnects, phones showing connected to SSID but “no internet”,   sudden drop in speeds, ..). Nothing has worked yet.  I did read someone tried running the RP-AX58’s in AP (non mesh) mode — next,  I may factory reset my router and one repeater to give that a shot using only a single wired backhaul.

This behavior is prevalent and discussed often.  I’ve not observed an OP replying that everything as “resolved” after prescribed troubleshooting..

Is there any further advice someone can offer that fully resolved similar issues?

I plan to call Asus support beginning of the week for help, or to seek a RMA while in warranty..   This is my second Asus “whole home” premium router in last 5 years.   A friend said he’d show me his Ubiquiti hardware setup if I plan to give up on Asus.

Hi @DudeBro ,

thank you for describing your current situation in detail.

The issues you’re experiencing include:

Random disconnections for IoT devices

Phones showing “connected to Wi-Fi but no internet”

Occasional sudden drops in internet speed

To help us troubleshoot further, please confirm the following:

  1. Make sure RT-AX86U Pro and both RP-AX58 units are updated to the latest firmware versions.
  2. Log in to the router’s admin interface and check if both RP-AX58 nodes correctly show wired backhaul or wireless backhaul status.
  3. Try turning off Smart Connect, and set separate SSIDs for 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands so devices can choose the band manually.

If the problem still happens after these checks, please use the router’s Feedback function at the time the issue occurs to submit detailed logs so we can analyze further.

Also, please send us the following information via private message:

  • Product serial number
  • Feedback submission time
  • Email address used in the feedback form
  • Approximate time the issue happened
  • Device MAC address
  • A diagram of your home network topology

Thank you for your cooperation.
