Assistant not working with bluetooth

I can trigger the google assistant with the bluetooth button dedicated to it (samsung buds pro) but it doesn't hear my voice.
It doesn't matter if the phone is unlocked or locked, or that it is in "trusted devices", it records no sound via bluetooth.
2-3 seconds later it pops up again with what looks like the same assistant and now it accepts voice input from my phone itself.

I heard back from the R&D department, and they suggested that you should try to reconfigure the setting for BT voice recognition.
