Zenfone 11 Ultra NFC problems - update

mark_coley

I posted a few weeks ago about a gradual failure of the NFC function on my phone. It was sent off for repair and is now working (it went from the UK to a Czech repair place, and back again, as there are no UK repair centres at the moment). From the repair sheet it looks like two "prevention issue" things happened adding part number 13ai00n0lf6111 twice, which is some sort of foil thing, and also a "NFC Function error" repair occurred which has the detail "Repair without use a new component - add  / reassembly / reconnect / cleaning."  The sheet also mentioned "Warranty fixing of the back cover (corrected problems mentioned by the customer) and associated parts was performed. Preventative rework was performed."

The torch would go off before it was repaired if you tapped the back panel. It doesn't now. Perhaps something was loose? No other part numbers are listed. Posted here in case anyone else has the same problem.

Hello @mark_coley

Thank you for the information!

I may have spoken too soon about the repair working... After a week of having no problems the last two purchases via NFC took ages to go through with lots of repositioning. The torch again will go off if you tap the middle of the back panel lightly with one finger, but not if you tap near the camera area or the other end of the phone. Occasionally the torch goes to a half brightness level when you tap, and if it does this you can then tap as much as you want and it doesn't then go off. When the video camera is on with the flashlight on, a similar tap will turn the light off. The camera still thinks the light is on.

Phone is now en route back to the Czech Republic via DHL for a second repair... Having found an online video showing what's inside (and it matches the ROG 8 ) the fault is where the ribbon cable on the back cover connects with the main board via what look like two connectors that may be just squeezed against each other. In my situation the contact is bad and degrades with time, suggestive of a fractured ribbon cable, poor conduction, or a dry solder joint where the terminal block is attached to the circuit board. Given the same wires seem to control the LED and the NFC signals this explains why the light goes out when you tap the read cover in the middle, why the light doesn't always come on when you try and turn it on using software, and why the NFC fails. I have found applying pressure between front screen/back cover with finger/thumb over the area where the two square contacts are makes the NFC work every time and from a greater distance. The light also stays on if you squeeze in this area, and then tap the phone on the back, which would previously have made the light go out, or go to half brightness. Close examination of the black cover in this area shows a little movement is possible when squeezing, so the previous repair can't have sealed the case properly in this area, and no doubt left the phone susceptible to water damage had it got wet. An image from the video I found is below.

If you have a similar problem try squeezing the phone (between glass and back cover) a few centimetres below the larger camera lens and see if the problem temporarily goes away.

I'm sorry you are experiencing these issues, I hope it gets fixed soon!
