Don’t know about other countries, but here in Malaysia they lock 5G to “approved” phones only. So far ROG Phone 5 and newer can support 5G here but not ROG Phone 3. The 5G Provider (Malaysia uses a Single Wholesale Network system where a single 5G provider, in this case a government linked company called DNB, monopolizes the market and other telcos have to lease airtime from them) says they want the phone to be re-certified by SIRIM and MCMC by Asus before they’ll approve 5G access for the ROG Phone 3 for Malaysia.
So this is partially the telco’s fault, but also partially Asus’ fault.
I’m already very frustrated by this policy as you can guess- I still have not been able to get VoLTE and VoWIFI for my ROG Phone 3, but now also I’m not allowed onto the 5G network. And I paid a huge premium for my ROG Phone 3.
