RT-AX86U Pro USB speed

Hi folks,

I have a problem with "simple" Samba sharing on Asus RT-AX86U Pro. USB mode is 3.0. Samsung T7_Shield USB3 4TB SSD disk attached on USB3 port. I tried NTFS and HFS format on that drive.  FAT formatting from router failed. When I share folder from router on T7 drive, tried copy big files over wired ethernet, final speed is around 1,7MB/s. It starts 60MB/s after few seconds 20MB/s and than 1,7MB/s. One of 4cores is 100% utilized during copying.

What can I do to get better speed? Tried USB2/USB3 switching, different filesystems (HFS, NTFS) and rtfm/googling, but without any change. Of course, newest firmware is 3.0.0.6.102_34313.

Thank you for suggestions.

Hi @LokoX ,

Thank you for providing detailed information. Regarding the slow Samba sharing speed issue on your RT-AX86U Pro router.

Your description mentions that one processor core is running at 100%, which may be one of the reasons for the speed slowdown.

The performance of the network card on the router may also affect the transfer speed.

Please check if the Samba service settings are correct, such as buffer size and connection limit.

We recommend that you try the following steps:

  • Adjust Samba settings:
  1. Increase buffer size: Try increasing the buffer size in the Samba settings to improve large file transfer efficiency.
  2. Adjust connection limit: If multiple users are accessing the share at the same time, you can increase the connection limit appropriately.
  • Test other USB ports: Try connecting the hard drive to another USB port on the router to see if there is a difference.
  • Replace the USB cable: Try using a higher quality USB 3.0 cable.
  • Check the hard drive health: Use the hard drive manufacturer's tool to check if the hard drive has bad sectors or other problems.
  • Update the router firmware: Although you are already using the latest firmware, you can double-check if there is a newer version.
  • Simplify the network environment: Temporarily turn off unnecessary network devices to reduce network interference.
  • Reduce system load: Turn off unnecessary services on the router to reduce the system load.

Thank you.

Thank you Aureliannn,
after last firmware update 3.0.0.6.102_34314, samba works as expected  (~100MB/s over gigabit wired net) without any my tunning (only firmware update)
