Reboot When Naming Devices - Asus ZenWiFi BE30000 BQ16 Pro

When Assigning Icons and Naming Devices, I experienced three reboots in a row.

Seems like more than a coincidence 🤔

Anyone else experience this?

In my other various routers, it has never caused the router to reboot.

Note: Asus ZenWiFi BE30000 BQ16 Pro running latest firmware.

Steps to Reproduce Behavior:

  1. Click the Clients Icon
  2. Click a Device Icon
  3. Click the Device Icon Again in Next Window
  4. Change the Icon to something meaningful
  5. Give it a Friendly Name
  6. Click Apply
  7. Mine accepted one or two, then rebooted on a third.
  8. Repeated and happened again !

So check it out ...

I WAS able to assign Device Icons in the Android App without the radios rebooting !

Had to do a handful of them twice to get them to show in the Browser/WebGUI.

So to be clear... I had Renamed the Devices in the Browser/WebGUI using the View List Button, then later assigned Device Icons in the Mobile Asus App on my phone.

If someone else ventures down this path, perhaps try BOTH Renaming them AND Assigning Icons IN THE MOBILE APP and see if it causes a Radio Reboot.

Sadly I have to say I think you've definitely run into a bug.  I have a single BQ16 Pro as an AiMesh node, and when the latest firmware was released 1/20 I as quickly as I could installed it, because I was seeing absolutely zero WiFi clients connecting to it.  After installation I was seeing clients connect and I was so happy, but as you can see from my screenshot it no longer has any clients connected.  What's worse is the RT-AX86U also seems to be suffering the same fate.  So I have an excess of WiFi broadcasters scattered around the house which isn't otherwise large enough to require so many...

Thanks. It would be interesting to see if you or others can repeat the behavior.  Of course, in your case, you'll need a few clients to connect to it first 🙂

Worth Noting:  I'm able to rename 2-5 Client Devices before the problem occurs.  It appears that the RADIOS Reboot, not the entire Router.  My Client Devices all Disconnect during this period, then reconnect when the Radios come back online.

As it turns out... I've posted this behavior in the SNB Forums and the good @Raven-au found that you can edit the Device Names from the View List Button without causing a reboot of the radios.  However, you can't edit the Device Icons from that list.

For continuity of this thread...

Nice Find @Raven-au  !!!! Thank you! 🤗🤗🤗

I was able to Rename 55+- Client Devices over a period of 45 minutes without causing the Radios to Reboot Once!!!

I wasn't able to change the Device Icons in the View List Button (Client List), but what a BIG IMPROVEMENT!!!

I "might" venture into trying to change the Device Icons now from the Clients Button and see how it behaves while "only" changing Device Icons (without editing names)... but let's just say it irritates those around me when I'm rebooting the router every 5 minutes 😬

Thanks again!

Here's the post in snbforums for reference.
