Adding XT8 to Mesh with ethernet = blue led

I have a few ethernet jacks throughout my home (2 on the ground floor, 2 on the first floor). I have a Mesh of XT8's dotted around the house. The two which are on the ground floor, are connected to the ethernet LAN and ultimately via a switch to a Fiber modem.
I have individually tested the ether ports by walking around with a laptop and connecting it directly to each ethernet port. I have 1GB down and 1GB up on every port in this way (limitation of the laptop).

I have added an XT8 to the mesh by putting it next to the master and connecting the WAN port to the switch. All is well. White led => good to go.
I take it upstairs and plug it into the ethernet port there (which I already know gets GB signal) and power it up. Blinking blue LED.

Side note: I still get the speed benefit in that room, both via wifi and via ethernet to one of the LAN ports. But in the mesh it remains invisible / not connected.

What am I missing / doing wrong?

Ok, so here's what I did:

- hard reset of the node using the WPS button procedure as per the above link

- hooked the node to the master and powered up

- added the node to the mesh

- powered down and took it to the upstairs room. Plugged in (power and ethernet)

- same blue blinking led

And yet, when I plug a laptop into that ethernet jack, I get GB internet up and down without issue.

What can I be missing? There is no visible reason for this not to work, and yet...

add-on: i tremoved the ethernet and rebooted. It still re-added itself to the mesh wirelessly (even though I previously added it while connected via ethernet)

If adding via Ethernet a symbol that looks like an Ethernet jack should show up?  (That would rule out the Ethernet port on the XT8 is defective).  Is it the same Ethernet cable you use to test the laptop and XT8?  If not I'd worry the cable is bad.

XT8 has different firmware depending on HW version.  Please verify you updated to the latest manually just in case based on the HW version on the label on each XT8.  (I would suggest using Version 2 as the primary router connected to the modem/(fiber) ONT.

If I add via ethernet, the ethernet connection shows up (the 2.5G Wan port), and the ethernet cable is the same cable I used with the laptop test.  I can still only add the node via wifi.W On the 'kitchen' node (in the tech closet), the node is connected via ethernet, but when I change the backhaul priority to 2.5G WAN, I lose the entire node again. All boxes are on the latest firmware. Based on the diagram, the kitchen node is not connected via ethernet, even though it is (ethernet connection shows up as a double line). I don't know what I am doing wrong.

Not sure you are doing anything wrong.  Do you have HW Version 1, 2, or a mix?  I guess it may be a bug in the firmware or firmware intended for version 1 installed on version 2 or vice versa.

Under ->AiMesh -> System Settings (tab) what if you enable Ethernet Backhaul Mode?  (Since all nodes are connected via Ethernet if I understand correctly)...
