(ProArt Z790 CREATOR) Can I use the DisplayPort In for Streaming?

clemensl
Star I

Please help me understand the I/O port configuration of this mainboard:

- I can connect my graphics card displayport output to the motherboard's displayport input.

- Is this input automatically transferred to Thunderbolt 1 port?

- Can I access the Displayport input by software (e.g. for recording whatever comes in the displayport input)?

- If not, does the motherboard support Thunderbolt 4 *INPUT* from another device (e.g., another PC)?

- If yes, could I connect one Thunderbolt4 with the other to get the DisplayPort Input as a stream?

Why I am asking: I have a streaming card with a DisplayPort In (Elgato) with which I stream the HDMI output of my camera to the computer to use it as a webcam. Does the ProArt Z790 make the Elgato streaming card superfluous because I could connect my camera directly to the DIsplayPort In?

Thank you in advance 🙂

Hi @clemensl ,

based on your issue, for ProArt Z790 Creator WiFi, it support two Thunderbolt™ 4 ports connect to all your content creation gadgets and enable up to 40 Gbps bi-directional data transfers.

To further push your creative work with one 8K or two 4K color-accurate monitors, you can connect your discrete graphics card to the onboard DisplayPort-in port at the back I/O and direct the video output via the Thunderbolt 4 port.

You can refer to the following product specification.

ProArt Z790-CREATOR WIFI - Tech Specs|Motherboards|ASUS Global

Using your camera as a webcam through a Type-C connection should work as long as your camera supports video output via Type-C.

Additionally,  ProArt Z790-CREATOR WIFI has Thunderbolt 4, it should be able to support other devices with Thunderbolt 4 inputs as well.

Make sure to check the camera's specifications and settings to enable video output via Type-C, and ensure that your computer recognizes it as a webcam source.

Thank you.

Thanks for the quick reply!

Unfortunately, the camera only has 4K support for its HDMI output.

Using a separate device to convert HDMI to USB converter works but what I want is to connect HDMI *directly* to the DisplayPort IN and grab that video stream.

So, either:

Camera -> HDMI output -> HDMI to DisplayPort converter -> Display In (ProArt Z790 Creator WiFi) Mainboard -> Video Stream

or

Camera -> HDMI output -> HDMI to DisplayPort converter -> Display In (ProArt Z790 Creator WiFi) Mainboard -> Thunderbolt4 Port 1 (out) -> Thunderbolt4 cable -> Thunderbolt4 Port 2 (in) -> Video Stream

Thank you in advance 🙂

Is it possible to use one of the two thunderbolt 4 porst as a displayport from discrete GPU to get the signal out of the second port?  Z790i wifi doesn't have any other options of DP in
