I just bought a Zenfone 8 assuming I can unlock the bootloader as was originally advertised. With ASUS's unlock app, the server returns a 10405. Is the service ever coming back or do I need to return the phone? It's a totally useless device if I can't unlock it.
There was word of a paid service from ASUS to do it instead. Does that exist?

It won't come back, because of "instability issues". Which no one believes is the real reason, but I guess if they're gonna lie then incompetence is the most believable lie.
When they definitively and permanently removed the bootloader unlock tool they should have atleast pledged longer security updates on the final rom for a recent phone like the zenfone 10. Which wasn't cheap and will now be a paperweight in the near future.
Disgraceful.

Regarding the Bootloader Unlock Tool for mobile devices: ASUS phones released after January 2024 will no longer actively provide the Bootloader Unlock Tool. For models released in 2023 or earlier, we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused, as the Unlock Tool has been discontinued from the ASUS official website due to stability considerations. Thank you for your understanding and support.

After the customers devices have been revoked the right for unlocking a bootloader, Asus has reassured in various channels to soon release a bootloader unlock tool, but after a while, it is now stated, that this promise has also been broken. Can you please explain in technical terms, which stability considerations are we talking about?
If Asus will "no longer actively provide the bootloader unlocking tool..." you can always passively provide the functionality for unlocking a bootloader via ADB, like it has been possible for devices before Asus has decided to switch to online bootloader unlocking method, so Asus, a $16.89 Billion USD corporation can later render customer devices obsolete and claim stability issues.
On customer' end, it is my personal responsibiliy for unlocking a bootloader and 'risking' stability.

So you will provide the tool passively? I don't think so. What kind of word salad is this. Just say it plain, say it cold.
"Too bad you trusted us, should have known better. Bye."
Because that's what you're saying amounts to.
