ROG7 Refresh Rate / Stutter Issue

Intervene
Star III

Every single ROG7 has an issue due to what I believe is the refresh rate not being correct which causes all content to stutter. This issue was picked up on DXOMark here (https://www.dxomark.com/asus-rog-phone-7-display-test/)

If you set the refresh rate to 60hz, the actual refresh rate will be ~61hz
If you set the refresh rate to 120hz, the actual refresh rate will be ~121hz

This leads to duplicate frames and is extremely apparent when playing games like Super Meat Boy Forever that scroll at a fixed speed. You can also see this on testufo.

Using the FPS overlay, you'll see the framerate exceed 60fps and sit at 61.

This means every 60 frames or so, there will be a duplicate frame.

This issue does not occur on the ROG2 which is my previous phone.
I have done a full factory reset of the phone and the same issue occurs.
DXO Mark made a comment on the issue.

ASUS needs to investigate this. I understand its not the latest model, but this stutter completely ruins this phone for me.

I was send the log to ChatGPT asked ChatGPT for technical analysis...

Here is one of the result.

"Technical Analysis

At 61 fps vs 60 Hz: every ~16 frames, one extra frame has no available refresh slot.

The system discards or delays the frame → results in Missed Vsync and visible micro stutter.

The root cause is not GPU performance but frame pacing mismatch caused by the fps overshoot policy.

Additional factors:

Overly fast auto-brightness transitions.

Thermal scheduler fluctuations.

System-wide frame timing jitter → contribute to stutter outside gaming."

A new firmware update has been released to address this issue, please update and let me know how it works for you.

I've just updated to 35.0604.0920.78 and the issue still exists.

  • At 60hz the refresh rate still incorrectly goes up to 61hz
  • At 120hz the refresh rate is incorrectly going up to 122hz
  • Stuttering still exists in frame-capped games.

The issue is unresolved.

Thank you for letting me know, will forward the info to the devs

@Mattias_ASUS any update on this? It's extremely disappointing to have a gaming phone from a gaming company that has an incorrect animtion rate on fixed-frame rate content.
