Same case here, I don't play games so didn't notice abnormal heating, but for sure it's hogging battery way too much. plus I don't think its cooling of even in idle mode.
Using YouTube video at 720p kicked CPU to 2.96ghz and 53°C, it's ridiculous.
I think there should be quick fix for this, please don't make us wait until next OTA in November!
Very interesting and weird. After i stop FOTAService, CPU back to normal. Then I try to install something from Play Store, it spikes CPU again. Then I manually open System -> System Update (it will trigger FOTAService process again). Then kill the FOTAService process again, it back to normal again.

There´s a bug in the current play store update from Google. The download service from playstore is stuck and is causing phones to overheat, because it overloads your CPU. Your battery life will get worse as well.
It affects all devices, not only rogs.
Rooted users can check this with top command. To do this type in terminal:
su
hit enter and grant superuser request.
Then type:
top
If you´re affected you will see play store at the top of the list using +100% CPU.
it´s up to google to fix it.
A workaround is to downgrade playstore.
A lot of people contacted me by now and asked me about it. Doesn´t matter if A11 or A10 or device model.
This is on the OnePlus 8 Pro running A11 Beta build from OnePlus.
Yesterday evening I was unaffected on the Rog 3.
Overnight my play store updated itself and now I´m facing the same bug as well. :(
Restarting will help for a short amount of time. Until the service from PlayStore restarts itself and it will happen again.
can try my workaround though it's a bit annoying. When you see CPU spike, kill process "FOTAService" (if already killed before, start it again by "System" -> "System Update", then kill it again)
As has been reported in this thread already, the CPU seems to be spiking because of a bug with the latest version of Google Play Store. It's affecting several models, ROG included. We're following up on this and I'll get back to you as soon as I know more.
Asus is so unlucky? At least 2 of your updates on ROG phones hit the same day of the bug. Previous one hitted the Facebook CPU bug, this one hit Google Play Store bug.
Just want to check anyone didn't update also hitted the bug? or only trigger this bug after firmware upgraded?

Mods, any thought yet?
Some of the rooted users suggesting that it's an play service issues as play service is throttling the temps n cpu usage....
haha, but now is not throttling, it spikes CPU lol
any advice from them coz we've clear data for Play Service and Play Store already

nice one, which version should we downgrade to?
Thanks
Honestly i don't even know what to do now.
I even did what u said to stop the auto download FOTA update and I'm monitoring the temps and CPU usage now.
Now I'm like
1. Cleared data from both play service n armoury crate
2. Stopped auto update
3. Waiting for a day to see the same problem
And if it's a google thing, they they should fix it as soon as possible.
@Anders_ASUS can we help us on this. Like if u can talk about the dev and clear where's the problem
Where the issue lies ?
i've also tried latest version 22.0.18...still the same...but i cannot go back to version 21 now😅
they will ignore us know and fix class of clans on next update in about 4 months

This work for me
Will do the same for now killed the fota service.
N my temps are back to normal.
Thanks mate
Will update if problem arises again
Hi @jasonwch, your workaround worked for me too. It's clearly a Play Store issue, I tested it too. Many thanks for your support.

You can revert back to old version by uninstalling google play services.
Ensure you deactivate device admin.
Then you can perform disable.
Wait a few seconds, then renable. It should take you back to old version.
Restart your device.
It is Google Play Services not Play Store where you download apps.
