atleast provide screenshots so that they can look into it xD
I don't have another mobile to capture my screen.
If I take screenshot directly from my phone, it won't be visible.
I've learnt that this is an issue with the high refresh rate panels itself and cannot be corrected through a software update.
This issue also exists in other high refresh rate smartphones with AMOLED display.
If there's any consolation, I have this image.
This is red tint. ☝️
Turn brightness 100%, if you see pixelated greys and blacks, then there's a black crush issue.
I just saw my friend's S20, guess what, no tint and it is a high refresh rate screen and even in OnePlus 7 Pro there is no visible tint.
But I can definitely attest to the fact that black crush is not due to high refresh rate. S9 suffered from it they fixed it via software patch, same with pixel 2 XL.
I definitely have the problem of black crush but does not occur in all the apps. It occurs in VLC but not in youtube app.
@Anders_ASUS could you find what's happening.
It is somewhat reduced in YouTube but in all the other apps you can easily experience this especially in dark scenes in movies.
@Anders_ASUS please have a look.
For best reference try watching invisible man movie, you'll get really annoyed by black crush.
@Anders_ASUS I can confirm this is an issue because my S7 never had this problem, black were pure not pixelated. S9 suffered and Samsung fixed it with a software patch. Please check what you can do.
This is in reference to black crush.
If you too see pixelated greys, greenish grey-black and blacks, then you have black crush issue.
No you don't. It's the compression of the clip. I've viewed your clip on multiple devices ranging from competitors phones to a calibrated IPS computer monitor which I use for photo editing and all of them show "pixelated greys, greenish grey-black and blacks" if you turn up the brightness enough. You need to give a better example. A timestamp from youtube or netflix that I can view on multiple phones do determine if ROG Phone 2 has worse blacks than other phones?
I have already told you that you may visit our Service Center once the lock down has ended about your red tint issue.
At 0:06 seconds, look at bed and background. There are pixelated grey-black areas. Please turn up brightness to 100% on all the devices you'll be testing with.
I have checked this on IPS panel monitor, my laptop lcd, my S7 oled panel and on my oled tv, my lcd tv.
No of them crushes the blacks.
@Anders_ASUS Did you look at video?
I have one more video from YouTube where the crush is a lot more prominent.
0:43 seconds turn brightness to 70% and you'll clearly be able to see the blotches on screen.
Please reply soon @Anders_ASUS.
Asus ROG II Black Crush
Samsung S7
@Anders_ASUS you can clearly see the difference.
Let me know if you see the difference too.
It's not the display but the low bitrate of the video. I checked it with several displays and the issue is visible in all of them.
See how vastly brighter the ASUS ROG's screen is in comparisson to the Samsung S7's. The brighter the screen is, the more noticeable the issue becomes.
No, it's not.
Rog 2 peak brightness is 626 nits
Samsung S7 is 855 nits
And both of them are at 70% brightness.
I am not some idiot who would lower the brightness to show difference, there is a difference because ROG II screen has a problem.
I have also checked on numerous displays before posting this thread, not here to waste time.
Anyhow, I'll wait for Anders to confirm.
I can only say that you believe it's "crushed" because your S7 probably shows less detail in dark areas and I can also see that the picture of your S7 was brighter. So not a fair comparison.
Here's a comparison between ROG 2 and another Phone that has won awards for its screen. I took this picture in total darkness with night mode active on my ZF6 camera to make the differences as visible as possible. It doesn't look this bad to my eyes.
Both screens were running at 60hz and were visually matched in brightness around 70%. They look a little different because I couldn't pause both at the exact same frame but I believe this is proof enough that it has everything to do with encoding and not the display.
Thanks, this was all I wanted to know.
I didn't want to go to the service center for a issue which is not there.
Looks like Samsung corrupted me as my TV is also Samsung and my HP monitor and laptop are IPS, IPS certainly doesn't struggle for deep blacks as it is backlit.
Thanks for the confirmation.
A suggestion for your engineering team, if you can reduce this issue to some extent in next update it would be really helpful as watching dark scenes above 30% becomes a nightmare to look at be it anywhere on YouTube, prime or Netflix.
A quick fix to your problem is to not sit in dark room. In a normally lit room, I don't see any of these artifacts at all
