To Asus and all owners of a dead Zenfone 8

By now is it clear the Asus Zenfone 8 has a weakness when it comes to its motherboard. Phones are dying in very comparable situations; after installing an update or patch and/ or when charging. The died phones show the same state: a sudden black screen, no response on buttons or screen, sometimes an orange fast blinking LED for about ten seconds when the charger is attached, after which also this stops blinking. Even the life duration of the phones are alike when this happens;  around two years.  Some people are lucky that it can be repaired under warranty, most aren't when warranty has just expired.

All of the phones which were repaired received a new motherboard. So also in here the fix seems comparable. Or at least not repairable with a soldering or partial replacement of other components. There is no wide variety of repairs to be found on ZenTalk on this.

This issue goes beyond individual or even wrong use, a single faulty or unfortunate phone. All phones that died did this in comparable situations and after comparable life times. There is something wrong with the design or components of the Zenfone 8, or at least a batch, which can't be put on warranty alone when it comes to a repair.

Asus, please take this matter and your clients serious. At least more then you have proven till this date. Asus can't just address this matter with the initial question if the phone is still under the warranty. Asus does know what the technical issues are with these phones, so please then also take your responsibility. Asus put this premium phone on the market at a premium price. This comes with an expected life duration that goes beyond a hard line of just 24 months. Warranty is for specific situations. These dying Zenfones are not specific. It is a general issue. So please handle it as such.

Can Asus confirm that they will keep addressing issues regarding these dying Zenfones as individual technical matters? And thus with warranty as strict and main component to define if Asus or customers are financially responsible for further action? And if so, what is their response to these resembling dying phones that Asus will keep holding onto this strict warranty duration when it is clear customers can't be held responsible for their broken Zenfones, since they die during normal use or especially after installing new and updated Asus firmware?

To all users of a died Zenfone 8: please add your phone to this thread, when it died (lifetime) and on which occurence.

Kind regards,
León

Sorry to inform that you may consider the data as lost when the phone died because of this motherboard issue. There are no known ways to successfully retrieve the stores data yourself. Many tried, even with the necessary knowledge and equipment. There are some who got the phone briefly to work, after which it always died permanently.

Ok, so from the latest comments, I gather that there is very little hope that I can get access to my data. And ASUS was really of no help at all here. I know it's a long shot, but if anyone knows of a trustworthy repair shop in Berlin, Germany, I would really appreciate their contact details to give it a last try.

My phone died in my hand on my way to work, while reading the news - literally under no workload other than scrolling an already loaded page. The screen froze, then after a forced restart the dreaded ramdump screen came on, and would stay stuck on it permanently. Prior to that, it was never dropped or damaged, and still looks almost new even with heavy daily usage.

Phone was bought on the 18th of August 2022 - so this €500 phone lasted me a whopping 2 years and 2.5 months - what a strange coincidence that it died so soon after the warranty ran out, huh? Judging from the responses in this thread alone, I am almost convinced that this is planned obsolescence integrated by Asus, and unless something can convince me otherwise, will never consider an Asus product again - who is to say that all of their other products won't die just after the 2 year warranty runs out again?

It is such a shame, because using this phone was an enjoyable experience othwerise. I have recently been thinking about swapping it for one of the newer Zenfone versions, since I liked the 8 so much - but I cannot justify spending that much money on a phone that seems to only last 2 years before breaking irreparably, and will therefore look for another brand.

Update from me:

ZF8 bought June 2022, Bricked while at the airport Dec 2023. Fixed Jan/Feb 2024 under warranty. All good.

Oct 2024 battery life started to degrade to less than one day with no real usage. Was > 24 hours previously. This is really sh1t as far as I'm concerned - so I need to look for a replacement.

  • I like the small size of the ZF8, so would ideally like a similar size.
  • It must have a 3.5mm headphone jack.
  • Minimum of 256Gb storage OR an SD-card

Alternatives are

  • ZF10 - no further Android Update
  • ZF11 - bit too big
  • Sony Xperia series

I think I'll be going with Sony - I have a XZ2 from 2019 which has been my back up phone still - so no real option for me.

I have a couple of ASUS laptops (BR1102 & BR1402) and a number of motherboards, but sorry @Falcon_ASUS - I think that ASUS has absolutely lost me as a customer for phones in the future. If there was a ZF11 compact  not ULTRA - I'd buy it. If you could say that there was a ZF12 compact coming, I would consider it - but I'm waiting for Black Friday deals before upgrading.
