Can you test both with the earphones and without whether you are getting a good pickup with the Sound Recorder app? You would probably want to test this in a loud environment, to simulate an active phone call with background noise. If Sound Recorder has a good pickup of your voice, check with the other caller if their phone might be having an issue.
