Instagram reels editor bug

Hi guys,

So I`ve been using zenfone 10 for more than one year now, and i had this issue ever since. Basically i can not edit reels via instagram reels editor. Whenever i use it it stops working almost immediately - playback stops, cant fast forward or backward, video freezes. If i go forward to edit reel description and go back it will work for about one or two playbacks and freeze again. I have to edit everything in third party apps, but some things are impossible to do with them (eg. adding music via instagram music database). Its extremely frustrating because im using instagram almost everyday at my job, as a social media manager in my own company. I`m at a breaking point of selling this phone and getting an Iphone or whatever. I tried reinstalling app and i bringing phone back to factory setting etc. Nothing works, please help.

I haven't had to do this myself, but just tried and yes, it seems you can play, pause and scrub but once you hit the end of the clip and try to play, pause again, it just fails to play. Nothing unresponsive otherwise and all other edit stuff works on my side, but what's the point if you can't play it back after?! Nonsensical. Tbh the Zenfone is pretty bad at handling media in a couple of instances.  My more problematic use case (for me, yours seems awful for you) is it will crash during or after sending videos in Telegram. It has been there since day 1, sometimes disallowing any video edits as it would just crash out. I don't get why it's so bad.  Anyway, honestly I'd move to Pixel or Nothing phone or something in your case  Better support, less jank than Asus. You don't have to stay with Android, but my wife used Pixel quite effectively for editing our social media travel Reels. Good luck.

That sounds incredibly frustrating, especially with how important Instagram is for your job! Since you've already tried reinstalling the app and even doing a factory reset with no success, there are a couple of other steps you can try before making the big decision to switch devices.

  1. Clear Cache and Data for Instagram: Sometimes, clearing the cache and data directly from the app can help with stubborn issues that don’t get fixed with a regular reinstall.

    • Go to Settings > Apps > Instagram > Storage > then tap Clear Cache and Clear Data. This will reset the app’s local storage, which might fix the freezing problem.
  2. App Permissions: Ensure Instagram has all the necessary permissions, especially for storage, camera, and microphone. Missing permissions could cause issues with media editing.

    • Go to Settings > Apps > Instagram > Permissions, and make sure everything is enabled that Instagram needs to function.
  3. Background Apps: Try closing other apps running in the background while using Instagram, as they might be consuming system resources and causing the freezing. You can also try restarting your phone to free up some memory before you start editing.

  4. Test Instagram in Safe Mode: If you haven’t already, try booting your Zenfone 10 into Safe Mode. This temporarily disables third-party apps, which could help rule out conflicts caused by other apps.

    • To enter Safe Mode, press and hold the power button > tap and hold "Power off" > select Safe Mode. After the phone restarts in Safe Mode, try editing the reel again and see if the problem persists.
  5. Update/Revert to Older Version: Check if your Instagram app is up to date. If you’re on the latest version and this issue just started, try uninstalling updates and reverting to an earlier version of Instagram from the Google Play Store. Sometimes, new updates bring unintended bugs.

  6. Try Instagram's Lite Version: As a last resort, you could try the Instagram Lite version to see if the issue persists. It's a lighter app that may function better with your phone’s resources. It might not have all the features of the full app, but it could be a temporary workaround.

If none of these solutions work and the issue keeps affecting your workflow, maybe contacting Instagram Support directly could help, especially if it’s a known issue for your device model.

I mean, the phone has flagship specs so it shouldn't need a Lite app to work with its "resources". Older, slower phones work fine.
