Confusing data online.

Currently have 4 + 4(slot)  (8 gig)

Some say it can be extended to 12 gig others say 16 gig.

Which one is it?

This depends on the specifications of your purchase.

If the onboard memory you purchased is 8GB, then by installing an additional 8GB memory module in the available slot, you can have a total of 16GB. However, if the onboard memory you purchased is 4GB and you install an additional 8GB memory module, then the total memory would be 12GB.
