Hi, phone screen is cracked from the inside and the phone needs to be given for repair. How can I take a backup of the phone?

If u connect it via usb to the pc, it should pop up.

Connected it via USB and it just pops up as an external device. I can't unlock it since the screen isn't working.

There is no way you can backup your phone.. I suggest you to go to local mobile repair shop and stand beside them while repairing your mobile.
