Cable could be faulty, I have heard of 2-3 units received with faulty cable. You can contact your local authorised Service centre and they shall replace the cable for you or else you could go for replacement, if possible.
as mamayankag said, you probably have a faulty cable. Some times it may work if you flip it 180 degrees but it's still damaged even if it works. It's supposed to work in both directions. Please contact your asus support
