RT-BE59 subpar speeds, connection errors

Hi everyone,

I wonder if this is a configuration issue, flaky firmware, hardware defect or something else. I have a recently purchased RT-BE59 (Firmware Version: 3.0.0.6.102_58892). The internet connection is 1/1 Gbps (fibre optic).

On default settings (QoE / QoS not enabled) the router gives subpar download speeds, approximately 250 Mbps. Upload seems to be unaffected. The only way to get improved speeds is to enable QoE. However, adaptive QoE cannot be enabled from the web interface (Apply button does nothing); it can be enabled in the mobile app though. Traditional QoS with bandwith limit set to something ridiculous like 25000 Mbps results in DL speed of about 750 Mbps. Bandwith limiter to the same number results in somewhat proper DL speeds (about 930 Mbps). However, when QoE is enabled another set of problems arise. For example, downloads are constantly interrupted.

curl https://mirror.bahnhof.net/ubuntu-releases/26.04/ubuntu-26.04-desktop-amd64.iso -o /dev/null

  % Total % Received % Xferd Average Speed Time Time Time Current
                                 Dload Upload Total Spent Left Speed
  4  6.07G   4 306.3M   0      0 21.79M      0   04:45   00:14   04:31 39.91M

curl: (56) OpenSSL SSL_read: OpenSSL/3.6.3: error:0A000119:SSL routines::decryption failed or bad record mac, errno 0

With QoE / bandwidth limiter this happens all the time. The download never finishes. Tried different servers with different files, different computers on my home network, different cables, router attached directly to the fibre terminal.

Meanwhile a different router from a different brand gives steady 930 Mbps without any QoS. No problems, no disconnections, just smooth sailing and everything works like a charm. The curl command above always completes without any issues. Same computer, same cables, same everything. The only difference is the router.

I have reset RT-BE59 several times. Am i doing something wrong or is this a defective product?

This appears to be a somewhat new product with just two firmware versions available.  Have you tried manually reverting to firmware 3.0.0.6.102_58849?

I've read of difficulties/bugs with QoX on WiFi 7 class ASUS routers.  I suspect at this point it is a firmware problem which is unfortunate.

Do you know how to send a Feedback (log)?  It is typically under Advanced Settings -> Administration -> Feedback (tab).  There's also the option somewhere in the ASUS Router App to submit.  It is helpful to include the time of the issue as well as the description so they can focus on the entries around the occurrence.  I was told/promised that they look at them.  They do not promise to respond directly but definitely will try to resolve in the next firmware release.

You mentioned fiber internet service. Are you getting a true IPv6 address or only using IPv4? Check by using Online tests. This could mean you need to use additional/different settings in the Online GUI for your provider, need to leave your provider Internet turned off for a short while and rebooted, or you have a provider DNS issue causing IP assignment to drop. This is just something else to check.

I did some experiments but I didn't discover anything that would've helped. I tried with IPv6 disabled and native (IPv6 online test giving a perfect score), various DNS alternatives and whatnot but I didn't notice any difference. I did not downgrade the firmware at this time, though. Might do it if the problem persists but first I'll wait for a firmware upgrade for a while. I did submit feedback to Asus via the router's management interface and described all my findings. Let's see if a future update changes anything.

In any case thank you for the help and suggestions, much appreciated!

I overlooked one more thing you could try if you haven't already. That is using the web GUI to set defaults and reset your router without using any saved files. Sometimes hidden switches will get stuck in the wrong position. Even swapping temporarily to another router mode and back again can sometimes get everything working properly. Also, do not turn on MLO. If on, turn it off. Good luck.

Unfortunately, your router appears to only support wireless router and mesh mode.
