For some reason LED is not blinking when I receive a new email in gmail. In gmail notifications under advanced "Blink light" is on and under Settings -> Display -> LED indicator all toggles are on.
Go to Gmail App Information->Notifications->Account in question Mail Notification and make sure it's default not silent. I had exactly that problem for one of my account's. Maybe that's the problem in your case as well.
