[Troubleshooting] iPhone/Android phones are slow to connect to the router wireless (Wi-Fi) network

There are some situations that slow down the wireless (Wi-Fi) network or it may be a problem with the phone or the network. If your iPhone or Android phone is slow to connect to the ASUS Router's wireless (Wi-Fi) network, please refer to the instructions below.

Note:

a. It is recommended to try to use other devices (laptops or other phones) to connect to the same wireless (Wi-Fi) network to confirm whether the same situation exists.

If it's a phone problem, it's recommended to contact your phone manufacturer for help.

b. After trying to remove the ASUS router, use other devices (laptops or other routers) to connect to your ISP modem to confirm whether situation is the same.

If it is a problem with the ISP modem, it is recommended to contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP) to confirm the network speed.

3. Confirm whether the phone VPN is in use

4. Try to clear the browser cookies and application cache

5. Try restarting your router and phone

6. Try to adjust the wireless (Wi-Fi) channel of the router

7. Try connecting to different DNS servers to optimize Internet speed

8. Try to update the phone and router system/firmware version to optimize device performance

Please refer to the following instructions for simple troubleshooting

1. Check whether the distance between your phone and the router is too far: If the distance is too far or there are obstacles, the wireless (Wi-Fi) signal will be interfered with, and the wireless (Wi-Fi) network speed may be slow.

Please place the router close to the frequently used mobile phone. Shorten the distance between the mobile phone and the router and avoid obstacles, and to avoid affecting the signal strength due to the signal transmission distance.

You can judge whether the current connection signal strength is sufficient according to the signal strength displayed on the phone.

The image below uses ASUS ZenFone9 as an example:

Go to [Settings] > [Network & Internet] > [Internet] > Tap the connected Wi-Fi name (SSID) to check the signal strength.

Please refer to the FAQ below

2. When the 5GHz and 2.4GHz signal strengths are the same, use the 5GHz wireless (Wi-Fi) signal first: Slow speed of connecting the mobile phone to the router wireless network (Wi-Fi) may be because you are using the 2.4GHz signal.

The 5GHz signal is faster than the 2.4GHz signal. You can try to use the 5GHz signal to increase the network speed when the signal strength is the same.

The image below uses ASUS ZenFone9 as an example:

Go to [settings] > [Network & internet] > [Internet] > Tap the connected Wi-Fi name (SSID) to check the frequency as 2.4GHz or 5GHz.

Please refer to the FAQ below

[ZenFone] How to connect to Wi-Fi Network

For Apple products, please refer to Apple's official website to know more about how to connect to Wi-Fi on iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

3. Confirm whether the phone VPN is in use: The network using the VPN on the mobile phone needs to be encrypted and connected to the remote VPN server. When the VPN server is overloaded, the connection speed may slow down.

Please turn off the VPN function of your phone before confirming the Wi-Fi speed.

The image below uses ASUS ZenFone9 as an example:

Go to [Settings] > [Network & internet] > [VPN]

4. Try to clear the browser cookies and application cache: The web pages and apps run very slowly. It may be that too much cache data has accumulated, which affects the operating performance of the phone.

You can clear the cookies and cache before confirming the Internet speed. For the setting method, please follow the software instructions in your phone to set up.

Please refer to the FAQ below

For Apple products, please refer to Apple's official website to know more about how to clear the cache on the iPhone.

5. Try restarting your router and phone: When you have problems with your phone or router, restarting them can fix the problem.

Try restarting your phone and router to see if this improves. The image below uses ASUS ZenFone9 as an example:

Please scroll down the quick settings item menu from the top of the screen and tap [Power icon] > [Restart]

Please refer to the FAQ below

For Apple products, please refer to Apple's official website to know more about how to restart.

Note: Restarting the router will not affect any existing settings of the wireless router. Instead, it can release some data temporary storage space (RAM) to improve system performance and make the wireless router run more smoothly.

6. Try to adjust the wireless (Wi-Fi) channel of the router: If your router uses the same channel as other nearby wireless devices, it may cause interference and slow speeds.

The wireless channel of ASUS wireless router is default to [Auto], you can manually adjust to other wireless channels according to your needs.

Please refer to the FAQ [Wireless Router] How to fix wireless Control Channel

7. Try connecting to different DNS servers to optimize Internet speed: The distance of the server, traffic, or how often data is updated can all affect the speed of your internet connection.

By default, ASUS routers will automatically obtain the IP of the DNS server from the Internet Service Provider (ISP). You can manually select one of the DNS servers in the DNS list, such as Google DNS servers 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4.

Please refer to the FAQ below [Wireless Router] How to manually assign WAN DNS server to ASUS Router

8. Try to update the phone and router system/firmware version to optimize device performance: Regularly update your firmware version to ensure that your device remains in the best condition.

For how to update the firmware, please refer to the link below. For other phones or devices, it is recommended to contact your device manufacturer for help.
