[NUC] Troubleshooting Overheating or Thermal Issues on NUC

Caution

If you see smoke or sense a burning smell from your NUC, disconnect all power cables and contact ASUS Customer Support for assistance.

Overheating or thermal issues in an NUC can cause the following symptoms:

• The NUC turns off randomly for no apparent reason.
• Windows blue screen errors (BSOD).
• Processor thermal trip errors.
• Temperatures appear too high on the Performance Monitor pane in BIOS Setup.
• Temperature monitoring software reports high temperatures.

When troubleshooting, always follow these basic recommendations first:

1. Update to the latest BIOS version for your NUC.
2. Load BIOS defaults:
   1. Press F2 during boot to enter BIOS Setup.
   2. Press F9 to load defaults.
   3. Press F10 to save and exit BIOS Setup.

1. Place the NUC in a well-ventilated area.
2. Check for obstructions around the NUC's air vents.
3. Try different fan control settings in BIOS:
   1. Press F2 during boot to enter BIOS Setup.
   2. Go to Advanced > Cooling.
   3. In the CPU Fan Header pane, experiment with setting Fan Control Mode to Balanced and Cool.
   4. Press F10 to save and exit BIOS Setup.

WARNING: Processor Thermal Trip error during boot.	Follow the basic recommendations above.  Clear the event log: Press F2 during boot to enter BIOS Setup. On the Main screen, under the Event Log pane, check the box to Clear Event Log. Press F10 to save and exit BIOS Setup. Restart the NUC.
Fan doesn't spin	Check the fan RPM in BIOS:  Press F2 during boot to enter BIOS Setup. Go to Advanced > Cooling > Performance Monitoring. Press F10 to exit BIOS. If the RPM is zero, check if something is preventing the fan from spinning. If the fan is not blocked, contact Customer Support using the link below.
