The Snapdragon 888 is an extremely power hungry chip, especially with a large screen. The newer chips lowered power usage a lot.

Update:Since the update 33.0210.0210.296 I haven't encountered any of the issues mentioned above. It is basically back to where it was before the update that broke everything.
