My current ROG phone in on android 8.1 fresh out the box i have tried updating and everytime the updates fail, whch firmware update do i have to dowload first

Yes, Android 9 is filled with bugs. However, it's still okay to be used as a daily driver. Also, security updates which comes with the firmware are critical too.
