I faced this problem when A10 came out. What I did was take the firmware from the download page and put it in the root directory of internal storage. After that, I have managed to update through FOTA.
Not sure about the freeze issue you are getting. After A10 update, I did a full factory reset, I recommend doing that first if you can.

As mentioned by ronald, have you tried factory resetting post the update?
There is a new update post .60 have a check if that fixes the notification.
