So it seems like the issue goes away if I turn off 5G on the phone. My guess would be that the phone is trying to place calls over VoNR and since I don't think the phone supports it (needs confirmation), that causes the call to fail. Is there a plan ...

I have an ROG 7 on T-Mobile and the way to get WiFi calling is to go to the phone dialer and type *#*#3642623344#*#* after which the setting should be available. Keep in mind that you need to do this every time you restart the phone.
