Did connecting external keyboard, mouse and/or screen via USB-C ever work?

Hello,

I have a Gigabyte M34WQ monitor which has a builtin KVM, and as such, allows to connect one device via USB-C. Right now my Zenfone 8 complains that there is either liquid or a foreign object in the USB socket when I connect the USB cable. The cable works perfectly fine with my Zenbook UM425IA laptop, and the USB socket on the phone also works fine for both charging and data transfers.

According to https://zentalk.asus.com/t5/zenfone-8-flip/asus-zenfone-8-flip-portable-usb-c-monitor-won-t-work/m-p... the phone has a USB 2.0 connection so the display is not supposed to work. This got me confused as I could swear that at least the external keyboard used to work properly. Am I imagining things? Or is it something which changed with one of the Android updates?
