[Healthcare system] Constraints in heart rate monitoring using optical PPG sensors

Optical PPG sensors utilize light to penetrate the skin and detect blood flow variations in capillaries, enabling heart rate measurement. While the technology behind optical PPG sensors for heart rate monitoring has advanced significantly, certain conditions may still introduce minor inaccuracies in the results.

 

(1) Proper Wear: Make sure the VivoWatch is worn snugly on the wrist, with the strap neither too loose nor too tight for comfort and stability. Avoid placing the watch directly over the ulna bone or wearing it on the inner wrist, as improper positioning can affect heart rate detection. It's advisable to use the provided silicone strap, as materials like leather, metal, or nylon may not conform well to the wrist.

 

(2) Skin Tone and Tattoos: While VivoWatch caters to all skin tones, melanin in the skin can absorb light, making it harder for optical PPG sensors to capture signals (and may also drain the battery faster), thereby impacting the accuracy of heart rate monitoring. Additionally, tattoo pigments and designs may obstruct the optical PPG sensor readings. It's recommended to wear the watch on a tattoo-free wrist.

 

(3) Environmental Factors: Extreme temperatures, humidity, or air pressure can also influence heart rate detection results. Avoid using VivoWatch for heart rate monitoring in harsh environmental conditions. Sweat can interfere with PPG sensor signals, so keep the watch as dry as possible.

 

(4) ASUS HealthConnect Personalization: The accuracy of VivoWatch's heart rate algorithm relies on the user's settings in the ASUS HealthConnect App. Before heart rate monitoring, make sure accurate personal data is entered in the settings (including height, weight, wrist-worn, stride, etc.). Avoid lending your personal VivoWatch without restoring it to factory settings, as this could affect the algorithm's heart rate monitoring results.
