Upgrading from RT-AC3100 to ASUS RT-BE96U BE19000

Question I have, is can I export the current configuration from the AC3100 and import it into the BE96U?

I did that with my last ASUS router upgrade and it worked perfectly, but I've seen conflicting information about doing this upgrade so figure it would be better to ask.

The AC3100 is running firmware version: 3.0.0.4.386_48322-ga38bd22

I have not started up the BE96U to see what firmware it had installed yet, but I just got it today, so hopefully it is somewhat recent.

I know there are a number of additional configurations that would need to be changed, but I'd like to minimize the setup time if possible.

Thank you.

Your new BE96U is quite an upgrade from your AC3100. I own both of these. The BE96U has greater range, a 6GHz band, greater throughput, as well as increased security and more features. Used alone, it should offer much improvement and your AC3100 can be added in mesh. However, I advise not adding the AC3100 as it will create conflicts and lower throughput.

The answer to your question is yes and no.

First, be sure to do a WPS Factory Reset when you update the firmware. This is imperative.

You will need to create a combined IoT SSID for 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands as this will insure legacy device connection. I advise to not combine the 5GHz band with the 6GHz band SSID or you will risk a conflict with the current BE96U firmware. This will give you a WiFi 7 2.4GHz SSID, a WiFi  6 2.4GHz and 5GHz SSID, and a WiFi 7 6GHz band SSID. DO NOT TRY TO IMPORT YOUR AC3100 SETTINGS WITH SOFTWARE. You will need to input your AC3100 SSID and Security Password manually. (The BE96U may also require a stronger password.) This will allow most client devices to connect within about 30 minutes - if you didn't have to change your password. SOME client devices may still need to be added again manually for connection. DO NOt TURN ON MLO.

Using the BE96U, you should experience your full Internet connection capacity. You should see Wireless transfers rated as high as 5Gbps to 9Gbps. Enjoy your new router.

OK, so I cannot just import settings and tweak them. Well, that's definitely going to take some planning them to go through everything I have set up on the AC3100 and move it over.

Just being able to migrate my settings by saving the config on the old router and loading it on the new router has definitely kept me in the ASUS camp.

I've  also had ASUS routers for a long time. I actually have two AC3100s and an AC5300 that were very reliable. I then switched to the AXE Wifi 6 models and now the BE series. The changes are just too great between the two standards going from WiFi 5 to WiFi 7.

Firmware in these new models is a definite drawback, but the ability to save settings for re-installation is still around. The firmware upgrade quality just isn't what it was before.
