RT-BE92U Persistent Thermal Zone Faults

First post here so bear with me if I miss anything. Since purchase, my RT-BE92U has been plagued with the same issues others have posted here. Up until the new firmware version dropped, I was having constant problems with network stability. I am currently running the latest firmware version (3.0.0.6.102_37435) and a lot of the issues seem to have been resolved except for one. Before the firmware update, I was seeing intermittent thermal zone errors in the system log. Since applying the update, I am consistently getting the following errors that appear every 3 seconds exactly:

Jan 4 18:29:52 kernel: read_bpcm_reg_direct_keyhole: Wait for completion failed, devAddr 0x3, offset 24, idx 2
Jan 4 18:29:52 kernel: thermal thermal_zone0: Failed to get RAIL 0 temperature, ret=256
Jan 4 18:29:52 kernel: thermal thermal_zone0: Failed to get temperature, ret=-1
Jan 4 18:29:52 kernel: thermal thermal_zone0: failed to read out thermal zone (-1)

On occasion, the errors coincide with a drastic decrease in wireless network performance. Under normal conditions, when connected to the 6GHz network, my wireless network download speed averages around 1100Mbps. This will drop to a nearly unusable 2-3Mbps. The 2.5GHz and 5GHz networks also see a decrease in speed to around the same 2-3Mbps. Wired clients seem unaffected. Once I perform a hard reset to the router, it seems to correct the speed issue for a while, but the thermal zone errors continue to persist. This seems to happen anywhere from once a week, to every day. Performing a hard reset isn't something I want to nor should have to keep doing to correct the issue every time it happens. Please let me know if there is anything else I can do to stop this from happening. I am getting very close to returning this router and exchanging it for a different brand. Thanks.

I am suffering the same thermal messages. They started today. This router has caused huge stress and problems since installing just before Xmas. I have a complex home setup and a factory reset is painful to keep having to do. I wish I hadn't bought it.

I'm having similar thoughts. My home setup isnt terribly complicated (only one AiMesh node on the network), but it's still incredibly frustrating to deal with having to reset multiple times a day.

Hi @RicoSuave @Lid ,

We apologize for the inconvenience caused by the issue with your RT-BE92U router after upgrading to the latest firmware version (3.0.0.6.102_37435), which has led to the hotspot error message and a decrease in wireless network performance. To assist you further, we kindly ask you to confirm the following:

Have you tried performing a hard reset on the router? If not, please refer to the FAQ below for instructions on how to perform the reset. [Wireless Router] When Standard Reset Isn’t Working: Hard Factory Reset - Models list | Official Support | ASUS Global

Check network usage: Please verify if there are any other devices consuming excessive bandwidth, which could be causing a decrease in the wireless network download speed. You can check the network traffic on the router's management page to see if any devices are occupying significant bandwidth.

If you are using the 2.4GHz band, it might be limited by bandwidth and interference. We recommend switching to the 5GHz band to improve speed and reduce interference.

You can try clearing the system cache in the router's management interface, as this can sometimes resolve abnormal error messages or performance issues.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, please submit a system report at the time the issue occurs to help us diagnose and assist you further.

You can submit a feedback form Web GUI (http://www.asusrouter.com).
1. Connect your device to your router and log in to Web GUI(http://www.asusrouter.com)
2. Find “Administration,” and tap “Feedback”
3. Fill in your region, email (required field), ASUS Service No./Case No.(not required),Select the feedback problem and description. You can also write down comments/suggestions. More details might help us to analyze the issue you have encountered in a faster and more efficient way.
4. Read the agreement and click “I agree.”
5. Tap “Send” to submit your feedback.
Then provide the product serial number, the time of submitting the issue report, the email used for filling out the issue report, and the time when the issue occurred via private message.

Thank you.

Yes I had to hard reset it yesterday however I do not consider doing this every few days a reasonable suggestion. Is your hardware faulty, the firmware or perhaps both? I cannot use my USB storage as any attempt to do so on your latest router triggers a host of issues. You cannot even map to the drive from a PC as the router blocks the connection. Yet the older AC68U happily ran two USB drives and I am currently setting it up again as the BE92U is so glitchy and unreliable. I am thoroughly let down by ASUS and deeply regret this purchase. You need to fix these issues ASAP if that is possible. You are welcome to my complete log files demonstrating this debacle.

I was about to give up as well but my issue has been fixed by doing the following:

Once you confirm you have the latest (3.0.0.6.102_37435) firmware installed

Power down the BE92U router, unplug from the wall outlet, let it sit for a few minutes for the cache to clear

Plug it back into the wall outlet, power back up, thermal issue no longer appears in the log, CPU core doesn't bounce from 50-100% anymore every 1-2 seconds

I'm pretty sure I've already done this at some point, but I'll try it again when I get home and report back in 24hrs to see if the system logs report anything.

That's great to hear! Thanks for sharing! Does anyone know if there is a way to clear cache without powering down?

Update:

Powering down and letting it sit for over 45 min last night did not work. I checked the system log again this morning, and the faults are still asserting every 3 seconds exactly. RAM usage is at a constant 68% with little network activity. One thing I did notice just now that I didn't see before is what you said about the CPU bouncing from 50-100% 2 seconds. Core 2 on my router is doing that right now. Maybe I was so distracted with everything else wrong with the router and finding how to fix it that I didn't notice it before. @Aureliannn_ASUS Here are some more data points to add to this issue if you need them.

Wanna chime in as well, Just got the BE92U a week ago and have been having the same issue One core with extremely high usage, bouncing every 2-3 seconds and the thermal zone faults. This is despite minimal network usage and only 3 devices connected

Jan 12 22:27:17 kernel: read_bpcm_reg_direct_keyhole: Wait for completion failed, devAddr 0x3, offset 24, idx 2
Jan 12 22:27:17 kernel: thermal thermal_zone0: Failed to get RAIL 0 temperature, ret=256
Jan 12 22:27:17 kernel: thermal thermal_zone0: Failed to get temperature, ret=-1
Jan 12 22:27:17 kernel: thermal thermal_zone0: failed to read out thermal zone (-1)
Jan 12 22:27:20 kernel: read_bpcm_reg_direct_keyhole: Wait for completion failed, devAddr 0x3, offset 24, idx 2
Jan 12 22:27:20 kernel: thermal thermal_zone0: Failed to get RAIL 0 temperature, ret=256
Jan 12 22:27:20 kernel: thermal thermal_zone0: Failed to get temperature, ret=-1
Jan 12 22:27:20 kernel: thermal thermal_zone0: failed to read out thermal zone (-1)
