It looks to me like mobile network standby drain is fixed now. However it would be nice if Android OS, Android System and Phone idle get some optimisations if possible
  • Elmir
@Debik this is the "game genie" or whatever. Happened to me when I was gaming and drained my battery, then I had this until I started a game (or game genie) and closed it properly.
  • Elmir
It is, but try turning them off and seeing what happens.
  • Elmir
Did you try turning off adaptive battery and background app management?
  • Elmir
Stop using advanced mode and use either durable or dynamic, that fixed the crazy drain for me
  • Elmir
Yeah I really don't see why not include it in the camera app settings, as this can be worked around if really needed (play music again after starting video, use a different camera app etc), but why not add it to one of the Zen UI goodies (unless it is a pain to implement because of android restrictions)

@Gustav_ASUS thanks for the reply. Could you share the adb commands with us please?

Well I have to disagree with the "testing" about the battery capacity. Most of the "testing" is done with the accubattery and it is really unreliable. For example if I drain my phone and charge it to 100% it shows my battery as 3900mAh, but if I charge it from 20 to 80% it shows my battery capacity as 2900, so I wouldn't…

    Asus answered: https://zentalk.asus.com/en/discussion/50073/software-support-period-and-security-patches#latest
  • Elmir
It has been answered a few times. Try using search before opening a new thread. Asus promises 2 major OS Updates.
  • Elmir
So as I said it was a bad signal area, Samsung was a few cm closer to the router. I also ran the tests sequentially so there might have been some interference when I was running it on the Zenfone 8. I have rerun the test multiple times and had no issues. I also have not experienced any wifi issues so far.
  • Elmir
So I switched countries (and providers and probably the frequencies used for 4G - as it now shows 4G and not 4G+) and my standby usage dropped significantly. I hope Asus can figure this one out, but it is a weird issue for sure
  • Elmir
So I haven't experienced issues with WiFi,and I just ran side by side test with Samsung A71 Zenfone 8 manages to get 8.55Mbps download while having slightly worse upload compared to the Samsung device
  • Elmir
I was using advanced with everything moved to the left, but I also saw the CPU freq never goes belo1.3, same behavior with dynamic,so leaving it in dynamic for now.
  • Elmir
So judging by your screenshot it seems you have normal Zenfone 8 usage. 0.5%/hour mobile network standby drain seems normal for the Zenfone 8 Unless there are some optimisations done on the driver or kernel level (if those are even possible), I don't think it is possible to improve it much
  • Elmir
It is the same battery size maybe, but a different SoC, different display etc. Try resetting the phone, turning off "adaptive battery" and "background app management" in the battery options and also turning off "mobile data always active" in the developer options. For me this managed to solve the standby drain.
  • Elmir
Also I think I found the cause in my case. I disabled the "adaptive battery" and background app management and this is the usage now: This is MUCH better. If you would like to debug this I would be glad to. Now I regret turning this on 5-6 days ago. I just couldn't correlate mobile network standby drain with these two…
  • Elmir
Sure, let's try with the logging too. Here is the airplane mode overnight:
  • Elmir
So mine just used 2.7% in 56 mins for mobile network standby. I have set it to 2g/3g only before taking it off the charger. Not sure what is happening to be honest.
  • Elmir
@CH_ASUS when I think of it, I can just share today's usage as that is what happened (only thing is that zenfone was charged to 80% as I Have limited it to 80% max charge and Pixel was charged before I went to sleep). Screenshot in English is the Zenfone 8 and the other one (Bosnian) is Pixel 3. Does this help you, or you…
  • Elmir
So this one: Was it on standby a lot - does the Pixel 3 drop mobile connection when it is on Wifi I can answer immediately - both phones had "Mobile data always active" turned on in the developer options. I will now turn it off for both devices and try to get the full charge to end of the day comparison for you ASAP…
  • Elmir
So both phones connected to the same network, with 2g/3g/4g enabled, for most of the time both were connected to the same WiFi. Both in the same location the whole day (carried them together). 5g was disabled on zenfone 8. Only 1 sim card inserted, same as in pixel 3. At the end of the day on my Pixel 3 there was 2% drain…
  • Elmir
I just compared my zenfone 8 mobile network standby drain (2g/3g/4g) with my 2 years old pixel 3. Zenfone has 12.3% drain and pixel has 2%. Both are on the same location so they have the same cell signal quality. I would love to see some improvements here if possible.
  • Elmir
Yeah, I have both of these turned off, but maybe I should reconsider it now. I also don't use 5g but have some 4g mobile data usage in between. I am running at 90 or 120Hz fixed though
  • Elmir
4-6 hours here. Do you have adaptive battery and background app management turned on?
  • Elmir
Not sure if this is doable, but what I would also like is that if when in the camera app long pressing volume up would trigger video recording and long pressing volume down would trigger burst shooting.
  • Elmir
This is not normal. I have a zenfone 8 for quite some time and after the latest updates it doesn't warm up during surfing etc. It does warm up when using camera app for a longer period or some more CPU intensive work. Could it be that one of your installed apps is doing something CPU intensive in the background?

I can confirm that it is the same for me. 120Hz and 60Hz are not truly black in the dark, and 90Hz looks perfect
  • Elmir
I really have to say I am pretty happy with the Zenfone 8 (coming from a pixel 3). Most of all I am glad that I see Asus trying to solve most of the problems that people seem to be complaining about, and tries to communicate with the users which is also very nice. It is not possible to catch all problems and issues before…
