UM5304TA does not support some USB3-compatible USB4 devices

UM5304TA does not seems to support USB4, as I've learned the hard way, and I'm fine with it. However, the implementation which disables USB4 is buggy, as it also bans USB4 devices with USB3 support. My CalDigit TS4 dock is USB3 compatible, and it can be used perfectly with just an A to C cable, but it fails to be even enumerated on my UM5304TA.

When I plug the dock directly to the computer, nothing happens. Dmesg shows nothing (I use Linux), and the LED on the dock remains dark. However, if I plug the duck using C to A adapter then an A to C cable, it works fine, albeit without PCIe tunneling capability and display output capability, which is a PITA. I do not care about PCIe anymore, but DP over Type C should be supported, but clearly on this machine it doesn't, unless your device is USB3-only and does not advertise USB4/TBT3 capability at all.

This leads me to believe the lack of USB4 support is not a BIOS decision, but a deliberate disabling. The type C port controller (likely a TI or Cypress chip every 2 ports) is likely being installed a firmware which rejects all devices advertising TBT3 capability from enumerating. Asus can decide what feature to open to the user, but if you want to neuter a feature, please at least do it correctly.

Not only USB4-specific features don't work, this device refuses to work with USB3 and 4 compatible devices too. This is a serious bug, please fix it. I'm not asking for USB4, I'm asking for proper USB3 with DP alt mode support on USB4-capable but also USB3+DP capable devices (basically, all JHL8440-based docks). They work fine on strict USB3 ports on other computers and phones.

B.G.

Sorry, my bad. The P/N is UM5302TA, Zenbook S 13 OLED 2022, non-touch, non-flip with AMD 6800U.

The following is the list of specifications I found.
Zenbook S 13 OLED (UM5302, AMD Ryzen 6000 series) - Tech Specs|Laptops For Home|ASUS GlobalI/O Ports:
3x USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C support display / power delivery , 1x 3.5mm Combo Audio Jack

In my understanding, there will be some compatibility with external devices. I would recommend that you install the system as a Microsoft system first, and then confirm whether the problem still exists. Sorry for any inconvenience it may be caused.

The Reddit post I quoted was tested in Windows. In his case, the left port works, the right ports don't. In my case, all ports don't. He even has a HWInfo screenshot, if that helps you.

I am not wasting an hour downloading Windows, install Windows, and patch drivers, then spend another 4 hours on getting my Linux environment back, nor am I going to void my warranty and remove the SSD and replace it with a Windows one.

Asus has plenty of Intel-based USB4 laptops, and certainly should have a good collection of USB4 devices to test with. Test on your gold reference machine, and enlighten me with whether it works. This is a 2 minute task for the right person with the right tools.

The forum is there for providing customer support, not for asking the customers to solve your design problems.

I just received my new Zenbook the other day and can trivially reproduce this issue - the problem and instructions are clear. This is clearly a defect in the Zenbook product, and your engineers should be made aware of it.
Seeing the support responses given here and in the other USB4 thread has me very unimpressed. ASUS has demonstrated that they do not listen to their customers, that they dismiss concerns rather than acknowledge the situation, and do not even communicate plans or intentions clearly. This was my first ever ASUS purchase, and will probably be my last - I'll be returning the laptop next week if these issues aren't resolved or explained in time.
