Zenfone 8 Proximity Sensor

My proximity sensor is non-functional.

I have confirmed via the SMMI test that it doesn't react at all at any of the distances.

I believe this has been the case since the latest update.

Damn frustrating when the phone starts doing whatever as it touches your ear/face during a phonecall...

Any advice?

I'm looking at downgrading from Android 12 back to 11, it wasnt so bad with 11

  • Is that an option?

Same here, confirmed with the hardware test and it occurs at least with regular phone calls and WhatsApp calls. I'm not hundred-percent sure when this started but I assume this is a firmware/os bug and not a hardware failure? Would appreciate any comments/status updates from Asus on this matter. @Gustav_ASUS or anyone?

  • I have the same, the screen flashes during a call. It didn't happen to me on another phone, it's a problem to solve? Annoying thing when I open other applications. Please help Asus.

I have the same problem: during calls the phone change audio and network settings ...that's drive me crazy😡😡

  • @immelmanj @tonnodoc @kvasnicka.marcel @Rellibs @the G

Quickest way to find out what's going on is for you to help me out with videos and device logs that I can pass to the team. I'll try to reproduce with my own device tomorrow, but for now please check your Zentalk inboxes for the log tool instructions.

Could you please also sent instructions to me?

My phone was repaired in authorized ASUS service center twice and in last repair they changed screen (probably with proximity sensor assy.). Proximity sensor works, but it seems like with short distance now (after last repair or after .61 FW update). Seems like distance when dispaly should be "switched on" during call was decreased and now I very often see that display is switching on/off during a call while phone is not so far from my ear.

What is normal distance on which proximity sensor should switch on display during call? I guess I had 5-6cm, while now it's about 3cm.

  • Quick update: Our devs are taking a closer look at the logs sent by you. I'll update you when I learn more. 🙂

I have the same problem. During the conversation, when I hold the phone to my ear, sometimes the screen wakes up and my ear starts up various functions of the phone. This is very common after updating to Android 12. When it was Android 11, it was less common. Please solve this problem ASAP. The phone cannot be used normally. Software version: 31.1010.0410.72, Call app version: There is no new software to download

I can send you some logs from my phone while this happens, but you have to tell me how can I save them.

Will someone take care of this problem? The phone cannot be used with this malfunction

Will someone from Asus handle this problem, which is reported by many customers ? Will we still be disregarded ?

I've had the same problem on my phone for a few days now. But today the problem meant that I COULDN'T GET EMERGENCY HELP FOR MY DISABLED GRANDBABY WHO WAS HAVING SEIZURES. When up against my face, the phone kept dialing numbers, muted a call, hung up another call and re-dialed a different number. I don't know what technical aspects of the phone cause this, and I shouldn't have to. But I do need to know, and immediately, either how to fix this phone or how to replace it. Please post step-by-step instructions asap.

    Hi Gustav,

    Any updates from the dev's?

Your thoughts on rolling back to Android 11?

Seems there are more users having this issue, including the two latest posters that are being quite dramatic.

I've been using the phone like this for a while now, it is frustrating but not impossible to work around.

    Cheers and thanks,

Very true , the proximity sensor is a joke , if distress number was functional now i would be charged for nuisance

  • I think the initial post from @immelmanj describes a separate problem. He explains that the proximity sensor is not functional at all. Remaining users, including me, have occasionally functional sensor -sometimes during calls it does not cause the screen to turn off, which is a lot annoying, but sometimes it works - seems to happen a bit randomly.

Anyway, I also hope for solving this problem by ASUS.

Everything has already been written by users. However, as you can see, Asus does not respect customers. Just know dear Asus, customers will buy other phone next time...

I refresh the topic. It will not close without a solution.

  • I decided not to upgrade my 2nd Zenfone 8 to Android 12 because of this bug. I would not recommend anyone install Android 12 until this is fixed. It makes using the Zenfone for actual phone calls very awkward and frustrating, and potentially embarrassing or even dangerous.
