I noticed that my new Zenfone 6 (Asus 6z) has the option to edit any particular icon by long pressing it in the Asus launcher , but is unable to apply a custom icon for that particular app .Is this a missing feature? If so add such a functionality in the coming update.

I'm not sure what you mean? It's possible to edit the name but not the icon.
Please include a screenshot if I have missed anything.

We won't let you change the icon. We're trying to be as stock android as possible and Google doesn't allow you to do this. Sorry
