(possible partial solution)
In my ZenFone 8 I also have had a problems with proximity during the calls, but choosing "Dark Theme" in the "System color scheme" and causing some apps being in a "dark mode" sufficiently decreased the problem appearance.
The typical proximity sensor has the spectral sensitivity to external light as the following:
As we may see, the spectral peak at 600nm region and IR part are very sufficient when forming the ALS reaction.
The OLED elements of the ZenFone 8 screen probably have the typical irradiation spectrum:
White OLED vs white LED emission spectra
As we may see, in active mode the spectral maxima of OLED irradiation is in a region of 600nm, like a local maxima of ALS sensitivity in the proximity sensor. It may disturb an appropriate reaction of proximity sensor when you get your phone close to ear. The screen light reflected from the head / ear to ALS may be mistakenly interpreted like some state without proximity conditions.
In my device the distance of proximity switching is about 20mm, so it may be an answer to questions regarding an optimal position of the phone during the call.

It seems to be so short. Even my phone has 30mm after replace of the display (I guess along with that module). But before that I had something about 5cm and no problems with proximity sensor at all.

Good to know that it helped. But I do not like dark color mode. And why there are problems in phone app when it's always in dark mode even that whole system - white? :)
To my sorry, today my proximity distance got completely zero. No blocking at a call. Seems I will follow your screen replacing experience. 🙄
I changed the theme to dark. Nothing helped, the screen still turning on by itself during a call.
ALL THIS WAS USELESS... 😫
Tis is a simple and accessible solution:
The free Google Play app "Call Proximity Sensor Fix" completely solves the problem for call.

Well. Do you mean it doesn't work at all? Try to download some software from Play Market and check your proximity test of how far it switches from any object in front of proximity sensor.
Thanks for sharing it with us! But I guess it's not good solution as it should be always enabled and run in background...
Hope Asus will fix it. I clearly remember that it was much better in my case on Android 11. I had speaker mode echo problem bfore A12 arrived and sent phone to service center for repair. They also replaced screen (do not ask me why :) I don't know). After that I got my phone with A12 and started to experience this problem with proximity sensor. :(
It's clear like a day that it is FW problem. Let's wait for fix of ASUS, but let you know that their HW is OK. I've tested my proximity sensor and it is working - alone.
If built-in proximity app by ASUS (obviously running in background) is currently not working properly.
Thus, you have to use another background app doing it's job. All the problems are from coders. A12. C'est la vie...
I also have this problem where I can be in a call and suddenly the display becomes active and my face changes various functions. Until this is sorted out I'm going to have my wallet flip case closed when on a call.
The app I mentioned above works well enough and consumes about 0.1% of the daily battery use.

just made an account for the same topic: phone makes crazy stuff while in a call. This is not ok!
did I mention that that is affecting also the Pocket Mode? This generated me a lot of problems as I have a Smart Unlock function paired with my watch: phone was unlocked in the pocket, pocket mode did not functioned, bad things happend: calls done wrongly, settings changes, messages sent...
