Activated 5G supported free phone on ATT network, can't transfer sim card to ZF6

Please tell us some basic information before asking for help:

  1. Model Name: Zenfone 6 (USA)

I activated my new 5G compatible SIM card as ATT requested (it would have automatically activated in 2 weeks if I didn't do so today). I put the new SIM card into my Zenfone 6, and it worked for a minute until I received a text saying that my device was not compatible, and haven't been able to connect to mobile data since. My Zenfone 6 was able to connect to 4G as usual, am I SOL? I got a free Note 9 from ATT which is nice but I like my ZF6 better... I don't want to upgrade to Zenfone 8 because I want both flip camera and headphone jack :(
