2017 may be here already, but several countries are waiting for yet another New Year to celebrate: the Lunar New Year, which follows the cycles of the moon instead of the Western Gregorian calendar. This time, the Year of the Rooster starts on January 28. Do you know what it’s all about?

The Lunar New Year in short

Known to many as Spring Festival, the Lunar New Year is marked by week-long festivities, great food and quality time with the family. Hanging red lanterns and wearing red clothes are among the top traditions, as this color is linked to good luck and happiness.

The Year of the Rooster

Wondering what’s with the rooster? The answer lies in the traditional Chinese zodiac and its 12 signs: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. Each sign lasts for a whole 12 months, and each Lunar New Year marks the transition from one sign to the next. Each sign is believed to be associated with certain attributes of that animal, and those born under the Rooster are often considered hardworking, trustworthy and confident people.
