Zenbook 14 UX433FN Webcam stuttering

I noticed the built-in webcam of my laptop (Zenbook 14 UX433FN) stutters, i.e. it would rapidly alternate showing the current frame and the frames from a few seconds ago. It's a jump-scare horror movie kind of effect.

In Device Manager I see that my RealTek device driver version is 10.0.18362.20118 for a USB2.0 HD IR UVC WebCam. I'm currently on Windows Insider build 20197.

Thanks for all help in advance.

  • Hello emsal,

May I have a screenshot or short video of the issue?

    Thank you.

  • Hi Blake,

    here is a short vid

  • Hello emsal,

May I know when did this start to occur? after any update or modification?

Please kindly check if your BIOS is up to date as well.

    Thank you.

  • Hello Blake,

I noticed this start to occur this month; I had not used the camera in a few (perhaps 3) months however so I'm not sure which update this would be from (I'm also on Windows Insider fast track).

Here's what I get when I check the BIOS version:

PS C:\Users\Em> wmic bios get smbiosbiosversion

  • Hello emsal,

    Sorry I'm a bit confused.

In the title you said the device is UX433FN, but in your BIOS it's UX434FL?

The latest BIOS for UX433FN is 310, and UX434FL is 304.

    Please kindly check and update.

Also, please kindly enter safe mode to see if there is similar situation.

    Thank you.

  • I think I must have gotten the model number wrong, my bad. I'll update BIOS and return with further information.

  • Okay, updated the BIOS

PS C:\Users\Em> wmic bios get smbiosbiosversion

However, the problem is still occurring (my webcam driver is still the same at 10.0.18362.20118)

  • Hello emsal,

In this case, I would suggest to have a hardware check on the camera.

Please kindly send your device to service center.

    Sorry for the inconvenience caused.

    Thank you.

  • I'm having the UM425, also running insider build (20211) - and also have the same Webcam problem. I downloaded Ubuntu on a stick, booted from it - and the Webcam is just fine. Its a Windows insider issue. Please file as a bug there.

  • I have different model laptop, did you checked other applications those use builtin camera .

download and install Skype application . configure the video settings in skype, you will see the difference

  • If you are an Insider, the option is to use the Feedback Hub inside Windows. I guess that if lots of Asus owners running Inside builds are up-voting the issue we might get Microsofts attention. Feel free to up-vote my problem description about this. If you search for "Webcam erratic in camera app, in Skype and netmeetings" in the Feedback hub, you will find my description and can add weight and additional comments to it.
