Screen won't turn off/go to sleep

I have a Zenfone max plus (m1) and the phone won't go to sleep when I press the power button or when the screen times out. It just blinks black and goes to the lockscreen. I've tried disabling gesture control and I opened the case to see if there was any dirt on it (it was clean). The problem seems to go away when the phone is charging, but comes back a couple seconds after unplugging it.

Have you tried factory reset ?
Just tried it now, and it didn't help.
